Welcome to 1st Nelson Bay  Scout Group

1st Nelson Bay provides the fun and adventure of Scouting in the development of the youth of the Taylors Beach, Soldiers Point, Salamander Bay, Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay and Fingal Bay.

Youth aged between 5 and 18 years can develop life skills whilst learning by doing, in the youth leading, adult supported program in age based units.

  • Joey Unit: 5 to 7 years inclusive - meet Tuesday 5:00 t0 6:30pm 
  • Cub Unit: 8 to 10 years inclusive- meet Tuesday 5:00 to 6:30pm
  • Scout Unit: 11 to 14 years inclusive - meet Wednesday 6:30 to 8:30pm
  • Venturer Unit: 15 to 18 years - meet Wednesday 6:30 to 8:30pm

Activities that Scouting undertakes include hikes, camping, canoeing, fishing, fun days, outdoor cooking, Clean up Australia Day, Anzac Day, visits to emergency services, museums to name a few. The list is decided by the youth, who look at the feasability, cost, assist in planning and running (the level of involvement is dependent on the section).

Youth work in patrols, individually, at meetings, activities, sport or home to map,and attain the peak award for their section. Peak Awards are the Joey Challenge Award, Cub Scout Grey Wolf Award, Australian Scout Award and the Venturer Scout Peak Award (formerly Queens Scout). The pathway to a peak award starts with the Introduction to Scouting, followed by Introduction to Scouting, Milestones, Adventurous Activity Skills Awards, Adventurous Journey, Special Interest Awards, Personal Development Course and Personal Reflection.

Scouting uses the Scout Method comprising of eight elements in their programs

These elements are:

  3. Nature and the Outdoors
  4. Promise and Law
  5. Community Involvement
  6. Symbolic Framework
  7. Patrol System
  8. Youth Leading, Adults Supporting

Scouting develops the Scout's SPICES, (Social, Physical, Intelectual, Character, Emotional and Spiritual) to create each unique peronsonality to progress into the community.

Scouts live by the Australian Scout Law

Youth are supported by trained and accredited leaders who guide and mentor them through their journey toward their Peak Award.

The youth and leaders are supported by approved and endorsed Adult Helpers and a Group Support Committee.

Parents are encouraged to become involved with the development of their children by becoming leaders, adult helpers or committee members and also enjoy the benefits and adventure of Scouting for themselves .

Unit meetings are held at our Scout Hall, 2 Norburn Avenue, Nelson Bay, with occasional section meetings at other venues depending on the activity.
